Powder for 45-70.

Exactly, 12 grains of Unique works in the 45/70 with all bullets I cast and shoot in my Marlin 1895. (Made by Remington, oh no!) Photo attached shows two of the bullets with 12 grains of Unique, top group of five is the NOE 405 FP, lower Ideal 457122 HP both sized .459 with Ben’s Red. Cast boolits typically use faster powders than jacketed bullets do due to their greater ease in passage through the barrel. 4320 is a couple of steps faster than 4350. Powders burn best within their own particular pressure range. The 45-70 would not be able to achieve 4350's ideal pressure level with a cast boolit.3901 posts · Joined 2020. #10 · Aug 26, 2021. IMR 3031 is said to be the most efficient powder for modern 45-70 loads. It is also about the easiest you can find at present. IMR3031 is THE smokeless powder for the 45-70. I use it in my Pedersoli Springfield Trapdoor. I don't believe I use buffers except w/ black powder. Some folks are fans of 5744 for reduced loads or "replica" bp loads.An armed man in a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject. A disarmed man is a slave. After trying a lot of different powders in the 45-70, and getting some spectacular results, I can assure you that 4198 is about as good as it gets. I've gotten as good results with Rel7 and 5744. They will all shoot 1moa off a good rest.
