Air Freight Market Update & Trends. Year-to-date 2023 demand continues to decline but has begun to level off, rates continue to decline. Demand Vs. Capacity. IATA forecasts air cargo demand decline to be -4.1% in 2023 year-over-year. Year-to-date 2023 IATA demand is at -6.1% and capacity has grown at +8.7%.Of the 135 markets, 50 reported higher rejection rates over the past week, though 36 of those reported increases of only 100 or fewer bps. Tender rejections did move up in Denver this week, even if not to mile-high heights. Denver’s OTRI rose 388 bps over the past week to 7.31%.

Historical delivery data from Clarksons shows that annual fleet growth averaged 970,000 TEUs in 2001-20. Deliveries in 2023-24 will be 2.6 times higher than that average. The previous single-year record for annual growth was 1.7 million TEUs in 2014, according to Clarksons data, well below what’s to come.
