Always use the category bonus drops when available, there's no penalty or cooldown when using this and it only helps. Before using the boost feature, always get a feel for the event, play 3-4 runs without any boosts and get a feel for the drop rate. It's worth using boost on events with high drop rates.

With the 3x XP its nice you get 71,400XP per run, and 23-4 you only get 64,200XP. I get better spawn rates by far on 23-4, but I choose the ladder for the gems plus decent gem drops.
