My 617 is a 6" and i have mounted a scope on it. That said, I have a 4" model 18 that is a favorite shooter.The smooth back strap is definitely a Model 58 feature. A real tell on this gun is the juncture between the barrel and frame. The Model 58 frame isn't grooved for a barrel rib and is also lower than the barrel rib on a target sighted barrel. If the top strap (the area of the frame above the cylinder) is checkered and the right side of the barrel is stamped "S&W 357 Magnum", it is a S&W Hand Ejector (pre-Model 27). It could be a "Highway Patrolman" if the right side of the barrel is so stamped the top strap ...The .38 Masterpiece target revolver was made from the late 1940's until 1982, then reintroduced in 1991 with a full lug barrel and made to 1999. I don't know how long it was in production as a -4. They came in 2 and 4 inch barrels. Measure from the muzzle end to the face of the cylinder. The 856 is just an assembly number.

Having seen him shoot consistant 2.5 inch groups at 50 yards, it had me wondering.
