Only three things effect the damage your shells do. Shell level, artillery, and Feylyne Bombadier (food skill). Nothing else matters for a shelling play style. So this means a wide gunlance with level 4 shells and only 1 raw damage will do more damage with shells than a wide gunlance with 500 raw but level 3 shells.There is a meta, in any single thing where numbers are involved and certain things change those numbers (damage in monster Hunters case) there will be a meta.
