Only the reverse side of the dollar, half-dollar, and quarter coins were changed. The reverse design of the dollar was determined through a competition open to the public. Dennis R. Williams, a 22-year-old art student at that time, won the competition. Once the design was approved, the 1776-1976 dollar coin was set for the mintage process.
