Unpopular opinion: I don't think One Piece would have gotten as popular even if a company outside of 4kids did it. The most popular series at the time were DBZ, Naruto, and Bleach - series with a bit of "edge" that made it easy to make Linkin Park AMVs for. One Piece has goofy character designs that makes it more difficult to catch on.
The main reason behind this is that Funimation had to acquire the rights to One Piece many years after the show had premiered. This was further complicated when 4kids bought the license before Funimation had even put their bid in. So not only did funimation have to dub all the episodes the 4kids version didn't dub they also had to re-dub all ...
