Sorry that your Marlin 39A had a broken firing pin, that is unusual. Comparing the 39A to the 9422, they are just different. I have both and the 9422 is the clear winner as far as finish, and it is reliable and functioning is very smooth, and has great sights. The 39A has qualities of it's own.

There is a flat spring placed above the chamber. The screw that holds it can be seen on top of the receiver. That spring serves two purposes. 1) It keeps the firing pin from rising above the rim of the cartridge. 2) It keeps the cartridge aligned with the chamber for smooth chambering.
