406 sbc vs 383.

Jan 14, 2009 · Just look at the heads on a big block compared to the small block. 3) if there is any bit of core shift, you WILL grind thru to the water jacket on a 396. 4) more parts options with a 383 (especially pistons). So, the verdict for me was: to go with a fully forged 383 with a good package. Aim for optimum cam and heads.

I have standard dished pistons in a GM crate 350, so it limited the compression ratio I could achieve. I also have 4.10 gears, TH350 and stock 31" tires.Having recently spent an arm and a leg building a stout small block 383 stroker I would have to agree with you analysis. Problem was two fold. First sourcing a 400 block that had good wall clearance and strength for boring. These blocks have been widely criticised for poor tolerances and over heating. The advantage of mopar 383/400 vs 383/408 stroker would be bigger bore size for better breathing and better rod ratios for less friction (hp/wear). Plus can be taking up to a way higher powerband (hp) if wanting to over stroker small block. The only real advantage to the small block strokers is size and weight if you care about that.more displacement tends to result in more torque and as a result potentially more power. if a 302 makes 1.5 hp per cubic inch, thats roughly 450 hp. if a 383 only makes 1.3 hp cubic inch, thats roughly 500 hp. Id also point out that with current after market components, the 383-406 can make exceptional power.

I have illustrated the crank angles and relative piston positions of today's most popular racing engine, the 3.48" stroke small block 350 V8 Chevy in standard 5.7", 6.00", 6.125" and 6.250" long rod lengths in 5 degree increments.Step 01:- Installing a Crankshaft. First of all, we have to purchase a 383 stroker crankshaft, 10.5:1 piston set, and rod. We have to note that adding more stroke to our engine can raise our compression ratio. The 383 stroker crankshaft became more popular than the 400 despite the larger bore.

The 383 is meant to be a higher compression engine, using either the 5.7" or 6.0" rods. 400 uses a 5.5" rod. The less oversquare you have in an engine, the more torque that's produced. (Oversquare is bore vs. stroker, for instance 4.030 x 3.750 (383) vs 4.125 x 3.750 (400) vs 4.000 x 4.380 (350), etc) 400 heads also have steam holes in between ...

ALTHOUGH i had a 355 with a big solid lift cam, and brodix 200race rite heads that was 11.5-1. changed the bottom end to a 383, dropped the compression to 8.5-1 (for procharger) and went to solid roller. the 383 would KILL the 355 motor for motor. in other words the low compression 383 would kill the higher compression 355. both can run well.

The fully dressed 383 fits the bill. the 406 is a better engine with the additional cost of the accessories add at least another $1000 -$1500. Plus another $700-$800 if the cam is swapped to a roller. 69 SS396 Cortez Silver ( SOLD) 69 Pro Tour - LS3/T56 (SOLD) 69 Pro Tour - LS7/T56 (SOLD) Like.
